What is a DHA license?
A DHA license is the Dubai Health Authority's authorization for a healthcare professional — doctor, nurse, dentist, pharmacist, technologist, or other allied health role — to legally practise within the Emirate of Dubai. DHA's jurisdiction covers Dubai specifically; Abu Dhabi is regulated separately by HAAD/DOH, and the UAE's Northern Emirates by MOHAP.
Whichever profession you're in, the DHA license is your gateway into Dubai's private and public healthcare sector, and every application runs through DHA's Sheryan portal.
Registration vs. license — the distinction that confuses most candidates
DHA registration and an active DHA license are not the same thing, and understanding the difference will save you real confusion.
Registration confirms DHA has approved you for your stated profession, category and specialty, and adds your name to the Dubai Medical Registry. Registration is valid for one year from the date it's issued, but on its own, it does not authorize you to practise.
Your license only activates once a DHA-licensed employer sponsors you and links your registration to their facility through their own Sheryan account. In other words: passing your exam and getting registered gets you into the Dubai Medical Registry — it takes a job offer to actually start working.
The DHA licensing process, start to finish
The full journey from application to an active license typically has five stages:
- Eligibility check — create a Sheryan account and submit your qualification and experience details for an initial eligibility assessment.
- DataFlow verification — complete primary-source verification of your credentials (can run in parallel with your exam booking).
- Assessment — sit the DHA Prometric exam for your profession and specialty, unless you qualify for an exemption.
- Registration — submit your remaining documents and pay the credentialing fee; once approved, you receive your registration certificate and join the Dubai Medical Registry.
- Activation — once you have a job offer, your employer activates your license through their Sheryan account, linking your registration to their facility. Emirates ID registration and visa processing typically happen around this stage too.
Eligibility requirements
Requirements vary meaningfully by profession, but most applicants need: a recognized qualification in their field (meeting DHA's Professional Qualification Requirements), a minimum period of relevant post-qualification clinical experience, a valid professional license from their home country or country of last practice, a Good Standing Certificate, and a completed DataFlow verification. Doctors and several other categories must also pass the DHA Prometric exam for their specialty before a registration certificate is issued.
How long does it take?
For a straightforward application, the combined process — DataFlow verification, the exam, and registration review — typically runs 4–8 weeks. License activation itself is usually fast once you have a job offer, since it's mostly your employer completing a Sheryan step on their end. The biggest variable is DataFlow, which is why starting that step as early as possible matters most.
