General Laboratory questions for the MOHAP lab exam.
General Laboratory covers the foundations that apply across every lab discipline: specimen collection and handling, laboratory safety, basic instrumentation, quality control and laboratory calculations. Candidates for the MOHAP exam should be comfortable with routine pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical practice and with the errors that can occur at each stage.

Key facts to remember.
High-yield general laboratory points to revise before the exam.
- 1
The recommended order of draw is blood cultures, citrate (light blue), serum tubes, heparin, EDTA, then fluoride/oxalate (gray).
- 2
Citrate tubes must be filled to the correct volume because the 9:1 blood-to-anticoagulant ratio directly affects coagulation results.
- 3
The Beer-Lambert law states that absorbance is directly proportional to concentration and light path length, which underpins spectrophotometry.
- 4
Culturing Mycobacterium tuberculosis requires biosafety level 3 practices, including a biological safety cabinet and a controlled, negative-pressure laboratory.
- 5
Most laboratory errors arise in the pre-analytical phase, for example patient misidentification, the wrong tube, or delayed or improper transport.

Questions, answered
Know the effects of hemolysis, prolonged tourniquet time, drawing above an IV line, the wrong order of draw (for example EDTA carryover causing high potassium and low calcium) and delays in separating serum. Questions often describe an unexpected result and ask for the most likely cause. Thinking through what happened to the sample before analysis usually leads to the answer.
Practice molarity, normality, percentage solutions, serial dilutions and C1V1 = C2V2 problems until you can do them quickly. Keep track of units and check whether the size of your answer is sensible. A short daily set of calculation problems works better than one long session.
