Convert the percentage to mg/mL by multiplying by 10, so 2% lidocaine is 20 mg/mL and 4% articaine is 40 mg/mL. Multiply by the cartridge volume to get the dose per cartridge, then compare the total with the weight-based maximum for that drug. Take particular care with small children, where only a few cartridges can approach the maximum.
For most adults, ibuprofen combined with paracetamol (acetaminophen) is more effective than either alone and is a common first-line choice where there are no contraindications. NSAIDs should be used cautiously or avoided in patients with NSAID-sensitive asthma, peptic ulcer disease, renal impairment or anticoagulant therapy. Antibiotics do not relieve the pain of pulpitis and should not be prescribed for it.
