    Key facts to remember.

High-yield restorative dentistry points to revise before the exam.

    1. 1

Glass ionomer cements bond chemically to enamel and dentin and release fluoride, making them useful for high caries-risk patients and cervical lesions.

    2. 2

Polymerization shrinkage stress in composite is reduced by incremental placement, generally in layers no thicker than about 2 mm unless a bulk-fill material is used.

    3. 3

Etching enamel with phosphoric acid (typically 30-40%) creates a micromechanical surface for resin bonding.

    4. 4

Minimally invasive caries management favors selective removal of carious dentin near the pulp to avoid exposure, provided the restoration seals the cavity.

    5. 5

Amalgam does not bond to tooth structure; it relies on mechanical retention, and corrosion products gradually seal the margins.

    Questions, answered

Consider caries risk, moisture control, cavity size and location, esthetic demand and how reliably the patient can attend. Composite needs good isolation, glass ionomer tolerates some moisture and releases fluoride, and indirect restorations suit large cavities or teeth needing cuspal coverage. The best answer is usually the most conservative option that meets the clinical need.

Understand the smear layer, the hybrid layer and the differences between etch-and-rinse and self-etch systems. Etch-and-rinse systems remove the smear layer and need dentin kept slightly moist, whereas self-etch adhesives modify the smear layer and are less technique-sensitive on dentin. Selective enamel etching is often added with self-etch or universal adhesives to improve enamel bonding.
