High-yield blood bank and transfusion points to revise before the exam.

    1. 1

Fresh frozen plasma is stored frozen at -18°C or colder, contains all the coagulation factors and should be ABO compatible with the recipient's red cells.

    2. 2

Cryoprecipitate is rich in fibrinogen, factor VIII, von Willebrand factor, factor XIII and fibronectin.

    3. 3

Irradiation of cellular components prevents transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease in at-risk patients, such as recipients of directed donations from blood relatives.

    4. 4

Red cells in CPDA-1 have a shelf life of 35 days, and red cells in additive solutions such as SAGM up to 42 days, at 1-6°C.

    5. 5

Leukoreduction reduces febrile non-hemolytic reactions, HLA alloimmunization and the risk of CMV transmission.

    Questions, answered

Make a single table of each component with its storage temperature, shelf life and main indication: red cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate. Add the special modifications, such as irradiation, leukoreduction and washing, with their indications. Storage questions depend on exact temperatures and expiry times, so learn the numbers precisely.

Stop the transfusion, keep the venous line open with normal saline, recheck the patient's identity against the unit and notify the clinician and blood bank. The laboratory investigation usually includes a clerical check, visual inspection for hemolysis, repeat ABO and RhD grouping on pre- and post-transfusion samples and a direct antiglobulin test. Further tests, such as culturing the unit, depend on the clinical picture.
